Frequently Asked Questions
Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitos that must bite a positive dog with HW disease then bite a negative dog. Homeopathy is used to treat symptoms to help remove them making your pet stronger and it not a prevention for heartworm disease.
To prevent heartworm disease in low risk areas you can use Deflea topically on your pet to kill mosquitos and black walnut orally to reduce exposure to mosquitos properly dosed for safety. If you choose not to use heartworm preventative in low risk areas, then you should blood test your dog every 6 months, the life cycle of the parasite.
In high risk mosquito areas, you should use oral, monthly heartworm pills in dogs who are free of chronic disease and have not had bad reactions to it. If your dog becomes heartworm positive, it is still most effective to treat them conventionally. The treatment is still an arsenic compound but less toxic than it's predessesor given intramuscularly for 1-4 injections.
It is wisest to prevent heartworm disease than to treat a positive dog since damage to the heart and lungs can be permanent in severe cases. Speak to your veterinarian about the risks of HW disease exposure in your area asking how many positive dogs have been seen in the past few years and where those dogs came from?
Healthy animals are resistant to fleas whereas ticks are opportunistic. Homeopathy is a type of holistic medicine, so the real question is what holistic or natural treatment can I use to prevent and treat fleas and ticks?
Homeopathic remedies can be prescribed to strengthen the constitution of your pet making them more resistant to parasites. There are several natural flea and tick sprays, shampoos and dips available. Deflea pet & area spray kills fleas on contact in 1-2 seconds just as fast as toxic, insecticidal sprays. Deflea killls ticks on contact in 2-3 minutes therefore it must be applied daily to twice daily in tick infested areas. Deflea also makes an effective concentrated shampoo and strong dip for infestations.
Halo Cloud Nine Dip can be diluted as a spray or applied concentrated to a bandana to make a natural flea collar. For more information on natural flea prevention and treatment read the article "Are Spot-On Flea Killer Safe?"
If you have a dog that is in your back yard and he develops fleas, one problem is trying to keep the environment clean. There are some products that address this problem in a novel way. You might try using NEMATODES. These are bugs that enjoy hunting and destroying flea larvae and cocoons. BIO FLEA HALT is one product that is sold at Pet Stores. The same product is called INTERRUPT if sold by a veterinarian.
These bugs are applied outside in the area you are trying to “clean up” once very four weeks and have special watering instructions (from the manufacturer) to prevent the ground from drying out too much for these nematodes. Another distributor is Bug Buddies 1-800-210-BUGS (2847). They offer a great selection of biological insect control -- nematodes and beneficial insects of all species as well as diatomaceous earth.
Spray your pet with Deflea pet and area spray then bathe in Deflea shampoo or bathe in Deflea shampoo and pour on diluted Deflea dip for heavy infesatations.
Spray Deflea in your home or sprinkle then vacuum diatomnaceous earth to dessicated fleas. Repeat the process every 2 weeks for 3 treatments. Heavy infestations may warrant an exterminator.
Early or mild cases of Lyme disease can be treated and sometimes cured with homeopathic remedies.
In advanced cases involving elevated kidney function, doxycycline is most effective to palliate the symptoms but it is not a cure. Many cases relapse after antibiotics are done so must be given over and over long term and sometimes for life for flare ups.
Following up chronic Lyme cases with homeopathy can strengthen the immune system in some cases if the animal is strong enough to fight the disease. Deflea can kill ticks in 2-3 minutes with direct contact, whereas topical insecticides absorbed subcutaneously will kill the tick when it bites but will not prevent Lyme disease. The Lyme vaccine is only about 30% effective and has negative side effects causing Lyme symptoms such as joint pain, fever, lethargy and loss of appetite. Cornell and University of PA veterinary schools have researched Lyme disease and do not recommend the vaccine for these reasons. The majority of strong, healthy animals bitten by Lyme ticks develop natural immunity which is the strongest way to become resistant to Lyme disease.
Lyme disease can cause chronic arthritis or kidney failure called Lyme nephritis in weaker or older patients. The best prevention against Lyme disease is to avoid tick infested areas.
Distemper and parvo are highly fatal viruses especially in puppies under 2 years of age.
Homeopathy can be used in some cases to treat and cure cases of distemper or parvo virus. Other cases, require antibiotics so acupuncture can be used to help strengthen the immune system and raise the white blood cell count by balancing the Qi and stimulating the body to fight the disease.
