To prevent heartworm disease in low risk areas you can use Deflea topically on your pet to kill mosquitos and black walnut orally to reduce exposure to mosquitos properly dosed for safety. If you choose not to use heartworm preventative in low risk areas, then you should blood test your dog every 6 months,the life cycle of the parasite. In high risk mosquito areas, you should use oral, monthly heartworm pills in dogs who are free of chronic disease and have not had bad reactions to it. If your dog becomes heartworm positive, it is still most effective to treat them conventionally.
